Self-portraits

September 8, 2011

In 2010, I agreed to undergo the most precise medical examination but also the longest : 1 hour 45 minutes lying motionless in a MRI tunnel. A sacrifice which proved useful in my scientific research ...

Recently, I decided to produce a white matter tractography of my brain from the data. My goal was to make the image of medical tractography that is the richest and mathematically transformed to create a work of art under the theme of cybernetics.

As a result, these two self-portraits join my Cyborg series in a limited edition of 5.

Special thanks to Gabriel Girard, Arnaud Boré, Maxime Descoteaux and Guillaume Gilbert for their contributions.

Galerie Steve Saint-Pierre Press Release (in french)

December 7, 2010

Imagery in Etienne Saint-Amant’s Work.

Speaker: Etienne Saint-Amant, artist specializing in arts and technology, Bachelor of Arts in Imagery and Digital Media

Mathematics creates a timeless and non-spatial dimension; it is extra-universal. One by one we have always tried to open windows into this world. Throughout time, humanity has produced artwork or architecture greatly influenced by the aesthetics of mathematics or a mathematical “ideal”. After providing a brief historical context, Etienne Saint-Amant will present two aspects of the visual exploration of mathematics. The first seeks to demystify, understand, explore, modify, colour and transform a fractal object into a structure that is compositionally and, hopefully, emotionally resonant. The second approach will consist of showing a technical process: fractional Brownian motion on a complex field. What follows is a very colourful display indeed! We will show a video artwork where mathematical painting takes form and grows organically. Then, Etienne Saint-Amant will present his most recent work. We will close by discussing the omnipresence of imagery in the algorithmic part of mathematical art composition as well as exploring upcoming trends.
